Be an Assistant Scoutmaster

The Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters (ASMs) are the primary partners to the Scouts: we teach them Scout skills, we go camping with them, and we help them become strong, confident, resilient young citizens. No adult can do anything more rewarding!

Attend Meetings

How to Be an ASM

How to Be an ASM

  • Attend every troop meeting (to the extent you can), in uniform.
    • You’re making yourself visible to the scouts, and letting them get to know you as a resource
  • At each troop meeting assist with activities and advancement.
    • There should always be an older scout, prepared to actually teach the scout skill and help scouts complete the requirement–You should mainly be supervising, supporting the older scout, and exercising quality control, but you may need to step in if something prevents the older scout from attending the meeting.
  • Now, help the scouts record their completion of that requirement in their book as well as in Scoutbook.
    • It’s the same process that you use as a parent, but you’ll have permission to record completions for all scouts, and to approve them as well.

Attend Campouts

How to Be an ASM

Attend Campouts

  • Attend campouts when you can
    • Should you wear your uniform? Maybe: It doesn’t make sense to wear it, except that it helps scouts remember that you’re an ASM
  • Use the “Camping Gear” page to help you pack for a campout
    • Adults never tent with scouts, even their own children.
  • What Will You Eat?
    • Adults In Troop 21 coordinate meals between them, dividing cooking and cleaning responsibilities between them.
  • Will There Be Coffee? Yes, of you coordinate it.

Scoutmaster

The Scoutmaster is the adult responsible for working directly with the Scouts providing direction, coaching, and support.

The Scoutmaster has three basic roles:

  1. providing the the junior leaders with the tools and skills so they can run the troop
  2. making sure the rules of the BSA and chartered partner are followed
  3. being a good mentor and positive role model

We value and appreciate all of our volunteers for their hours of dedication to our scouts' journeys.
